One of the most rewarding journeys of my professional career began in the spring of 2013, when I participated in the Connecticut ASBO SFO® study group, immersing myself in the challenges and opportunities that come with becoming a Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations (SFO). In the fall of that year, I earned my SFO certification, a milestone that marked not only the culmination of months of hard work but the beginning of a deeper connection to my role as a school business official.

As I continued to engage with the certification program, I gained a deep appreciation for the rigorous testing process and the detailed work that went into creating and maintaining the program. The SFO certification was a symbol of expertise and a true commitment to excellence in our profession. The more I learned, the more I recognized how much effort was invested in developing this program, driven by professionals who understand our unique challenges.

In 2020, I was invited to serve on the SFO Commission and have been actively involved ever since. From contributing to the commission’s exam reclassification review to serving as its secretary, and now as its chair, I have had the privilege of being part of a process that continuously evolves to better serve school business leaders.

This experience has increased my commitment to the ongoing development and enhancement of the SFO certification, and I am excited to be in a position where I can help shape the program's future. Working with colleagues from across the country who share the same passion for school business management has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my professional journey. Together, we advocate for the importance of our roles, ensuring that the value of school business leadership is recognized and supported at all levels.

Meaningful Impact

Earning the SFO certification has had a meaningful impact on me, both professionally and personally. On a professional level, it has significantly strengthened my knowledge and skillset, equipping me to navigate the increasingly complex financial and operational challenges in education. On a personal level, it has enhanced my confidence, not only in my abilities but in the trust that my board, school staff, colleagues, and community have in me.

It’s one thing to manage a district’s finances; it’s another to lead with a sense of assurance that you are applying sound, proven practices — especially during times of uncertainty or crisis. For me, pursuing SFO certification through ASBO International wasn’t just an investment in my career; it was a way to demonstrate the professionalism, dedication, and leadership that we, as school business officials, bring to the table.

Spotlight on School Business

School business officials often work behind the scenes, handling some of the most complex and critical tasks that keep our schools running smoothly. Despite our vital role, our positions are frequently misunderstood or overlooked. Whether managing budgets, overseeing operations, ensuring compliance, or guiding our districts through financial crises, our work is essential to the success of our schools.

Our ability to perform these multifaceted roles directly affects the district's overall performance. Our colleagues, community leaders, and other stakeholders must understand the scope of our responsibilities and the expertise we bring to the table.

This is where the ASBO International Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations certification can make a real difference. It provides us with the platform to highlight the significance of our work and reinforces our commitment to effective and transparent school business management.

Adding another task to your already full plate might feel overwhelming. We’ve all faced the pressure of balancing endless responsibilities. The demands on our time have never been greater. Yet, despite the challenges, we always find time to support colleagues, attend additional meetings, or contribute to important district projects.

The same commitment and dedication that help you juggle multiple tasks can also guide you in pursuing the SFO certification. It’s not just about taking an exam or completing a program — it’s about making a long-term investment in your career, your district, and your professional growth.

Earning the SFO certification will bring you tangible benefits, both professionally and personally. It will communicate to your employer, colleagues, and the broader community that you have proven expertise in school finance and business operations. More importantly, it will elevate the school business leadership profession as a whole, ensuring that we remain integral to decision-making processes at all levels. School business officials who hold the SFO certification stand out as trusted, skilled leaders committed to excellence.

The SFO certification has served as a testament to my ongoing professional development. It’s shown my stakeholders that I have the knowledge, skills, and commitment to lead effectively in financial and operational areas. But beyond that, it’s provided me with a deeper sense of purpose and connection to the broader community of school business officials who share my passion for advancing the profession.
