From the Business Office to the Classroom – You Make a Difference

While budgets, contracts, and audits may be the visible side of an SBO’s job, our true mission is to ensure that every dollar supports student success.

When the school bus arrives, the lights are on, breakfast is ready, and classrooms are clean, it’s not by accident. This is school business at work. While budgets, contracts, and audits may be the visible side of our job, our true mission is to ensure that every dollar supports student success.

Our work may not take place inside the classroom, and most students probably have no idea who is responsible for paying their teachers, developing bus routes, negotiating contracts for the high school renovation project, or ensuring healthy meals each day. Still, every department we oversee plays a direct role in student learning.

Leading with Purpose

As school business officials, leading with purpose begins with the budget process — the foundation for everything we do. The budget is more than just a spreadsheet or a financial plan; it should be a statement of our district values. Purpose-driven budgeting asks:

  • How will this impact the students?
  • Does this align with our mission?
  • Which goal does this address?

When resources are allocated to support student learning, the budget becomes a strategic tool for student success.

With the school year just beginning, now is a great time to reinforce the “why” with our teams and to build a culture of leading with purpose.

Connecting Tasks to Impact — Purpose in Action

It is easy for our teams to lose sight of their connection with the classroom. This is why it is important for us to help every team member find the link between their work and its impact on student learning.

Consider the following departmental impacts:

Custodial/Maintenance. Well-lit, comfortable, temperature-controlled, safe, and clean environments allow students to stay focused. Safety/security upgrades protect the students, staff, and the facility, safeguarding the learning environment.

Transportation. Safe, reliable transportation gets students to school ready to learn and back home safely each day. Efficient routing frees up funds for instructional expenses. A friendly “good morning” or “have a great day” can positively shape a student’s day.

Food Service. Nutritious meals fuel attention, improve behavior, and increase attendance. By providing healthy choices, students are better prepared to learn and participate in class.

Financial Operations. Paying staff on time, processing vendor payments promptly, making sound purchasing practices, and following compliance procedures ensure resources are available when needed and funds are used effectively to support instructional programming.

With the school year just beginning, now is a great time to reinforce the “why” with our teams and to build a culture of leading with purpose.

Celebrate the Wins

Reinforcing purpose means recognizing contributions, both big and small.

  • Share stories of how operational decisions improve student achievement with the staff, administration, and community.
  • Recognize and thank team members for their behind-the-scenes work that ultimately affects student learning.
  • Celebrate milestones – from a successful audit to the timely completion of a facilities project – and always connect each win back to the students.

When we recognize and know our “why,” it becomes easier to prioritize, face challenges, and inspire our teams.

Our path from the business office to the classroom may not always be visible, but it is vital. Every efficient process, well-negotiated contract, meal served, and strategic investment creates opportunities for students to learn and grow.

As we start the school year, let us commit to making every decision with the classroom in mind because when we lead with purpose, we turn routine tasks into powerful drivers of student success.
